COLONIAL WALKING TOUR
Suggested Timings:
Duration 2 hours
Minimum:
20 Adults
Maximum:
25 Adults per group (up to 250 guests can take this tour)
Take
a walk into Sydney’s history from
the ‘thief colony’ of 1788 to the splendid Sydney Opera House opened in 1973.
In
the historic Rocks area walk up the narrowest lane in the city, a very dangerous
place one hundred years ago. You’ll visit the oldest house in Sydney,
see where the first ships landed their cargoes of convicts and hear stories
of Sydney’s early residents: the bigamists, the convicts
who made good, the failed escapes and later the waterside workers who lived
in The Rocks. You’ll hear, too, about the Aboriginal tribes of Sydney Cove.
The
walk then continues along Circular Quay, with its busy commuter ferries. Visit
the Tank Stream Fountain commemorating the freshwater stream which still runs
under your feet and into the Quay. Stop at Customs House, built in 1845,
then walk to within sight of the Harbour Bridge and hear about its dramatic opening. Your final stop is the
Sydney Opera House, where you climb the stairs to take a closer look at this
magnificent structure.
At
the end of the walk you are free to wander at leisure through the Royal Botanic
Gardens or have a drink at one of the open air cafes along the Quay.
We
suggest that you wear comfortable clothes, especially shoes, bring a hat and
water, and avoid bringing a heavy bag. There are places to sit down en route
and a toilet stop if needed.

COST PER PERSON: $27.00AUD net per person (approx $21.00USD)

BONDI TO BRONTE WALK
Suggested Timings: 4 hours
Minimum: 20 Adults
Guests are transferred from their hotel to the famous Bondi Beach – a Sydney Icon, popular with
locals and visitors alike. The expert local guide will lead guests on a walk
used by the local residents every day of the year, but of which most visitors
to Sydney are not even aware. The
walk winds from the bustling Bondi Beach along the coast to the residential beach of Bronte, where children play and local people relax in the afternoon
sun. Enjoy the spectacular views, while taking in the ambience of life in
Sydney’s Eastern Beaches.
The walk is 2.5 kilometres one way and of medium grade, with
some steep steps. The walk begins at the Bondi Pavilion, walk down to the
beachside promenade and continue towards South Bondi.
Points of Interest:
- Bondi Pavilion:
As ‘surf bathing’ gained popularity Waverley Council recognised the need for
improved beach facilities. The foundation stone for Bondi Pavilion was laid
in 1928. The Pavilion, part of an overall scheme for beach improvements,
contained dressing areas for 12,000 people, Turkish baths, shops, gymnasium
and ballroom. A huge crowd of 200,000 attended the official opening of the
Bondi Beach Improvement Scheme. Ceremonies included brass bands, bugle bands
and fife and drum bands, aeroplane stunts and a parachute jump. King Neptune
landed from a surf boat in front of the Pavilion. There was also a procession
led by Life Savers.
- Surf life saving
was started in Australia. The Bondi Surf
Bathers' Life Saving Club was formed in 1906. Both Bondi S.B.L.S.C. and Bronte
S.L.S.C. claim to be the world's oldest surf life saving clubs. North Bondi
S.L.S.C. was formed the following year.
On
6th February, 1938, to become known as ‘Black Sunday’, life savers carried
out their most famous rescue operation. Several freak waves swept up on to
Bondi Beach dragging
beachgoers out into boiling seas. Life savers rescued more than 300 people
that day. Five people drowned.
- The famous Bondi Icebergs Club is
above the Bondi Baths at the southern end of the beach. Full club membership
can only be attained by swimming 3 Sundays out of 4 from May to September
(winter) for 5 years. The club has approximately 600 members. Visitors
are welcome.
- Views from Mackenies Point south
to Maroubra. The sandstone cliffs form part of the Hawkesbury sandstone belt
and date back to the Triassic Age, 190-225 million years B.C. Surrounding
land, known as Mackenzies Waverley Dairy, was used for grazing in the 1880s.
- Aboriginal rock carvings in Marks
Park were regrooved in 1962. Governor Philip, Sydney's
founding Governor noted the Cadigal aboriginal people roamed the land from
South Head, at the harbour entrance to Sydney Cove, including today's Waverley Municipality.
- Swimming at Mackenzies
Bay is dangerous, the beach is not patrolled and there are hidden rocks.
-
Tamarama beach frontage was bought by David Fletcher (later Waverley's
first Mayor) and the headland became known as Fletcher's Glen. Tamarama's
natural beauty was threatened in 1887 when ‘The Aquarium’ was built, an amusement
park offering a variety of displays and entertainment. In 1906 ‘Wonderland City’ straddled the headland. This extravaganza included an airship
and miniature railway. Today Tamarama still retains much of its original
charm, a small beach used mainly by locals.
-
Walk finishes at North Bronte cliffs.

SYDNEY URBAN-GAIME!
Suggested Timings:
Duration 3 hours
Minimum:
20 Adults
Urbangaining is a simplified city form of the ever popular Rogaining.
Guests have the opportunity to participate in an urban team challenge, designed
to engage the mind and body.
This morning’s (or afternoon’s) Urbangaining will have you
exploring and navigating around Circular Quay and through the historic Rocks
area of Sydney. In Urbangaining,
small group teams (from two members upwards) are given specific tasks to achieve,
sights to locate and objectives to reach within a specific time frame; visit
as many checkpoints as possible within your Gaine / Game location, namely
The Rocks (alternate locations possible).
This is a fun way of exploring the oldest part of Sydney
or it can be developed into a team building exercise. Teams must travel entirely
on foot. To help you on your endeavours, you will be given maps and navigational
advice from your guide, but the rest is up to you and your team to successfully
reach the end of your checkpoints and learn about this historic area as you
explore its streets and precincts. Explore at your own pace… or engage
in some friendly ‘competition’…
Much of the activity takes place in The Rocks, Sydney's oldest preserved colonial district, named for the rugged cliffs
that were once its dominant feature. In 1788, the First Fleeters under Governor
Phillip’s command erected makeshift buildings and then the convicts’ hard
labour was used to establish more permanent structures in the form of the
rough hewn streets. Wharves, warehouses, hotels, rough houses and even rougher
characters gave The Rocks its colour. The early houses may be gone, except
for Cadman’s Cottage, but the irregular labyrinthine lanes are still rich
in the flavour of convict and colonial history and colour and more… much more…
Urbangaining is a great way to explore undiscovered galleries
and stores, including the historic Argyle Stores, a beautifully restored warehouse
of open plan boutique shopping. An ideal chance to see and learn about this
part of Sydney and not to be missed!
ESTIMATED COST PER PERSON: Estimate $100.00AUD net per person (approx $78.00USD)
COST INCLUDES:
local guide based on 4 hours

SHOPPING SHUTTLE
Suggested Timings:
Duration 4 hours
Minimum:
20 Adults
Central Sydney is arguably the largest shopping area in Australia
and, therefore, the South Pacific. It is for this reason that shopping is
cited as one of the main reasons international travellers visit Sydney.
Sydney shopping is fantastic. This
cosmopolitan city caters for every need.
It does not matter what your taste or style, Sydney
offers endless choices. With names like Cartier, Hugo Boss, Hermes, Celine,
Hardy Brothers, Louis Vitton, Chanel, Gucci, Dunhill, Christian Lacroix, Jag,
Benetton, Pierre Cardin and Akubra, shopping here is of an international standard
including of course, duty free.
Sydney has established itself as one of the most economical duty
free ports because of the low Australian dollar and the high volume of sales.
Interspersed amongst the myriad of individual shops, boutiques, shopping arcades
and duty free shops, are a number of large shopping zones. The largest of
these are the two main Department Stores, namely David Jones and Myers. To
this pair can be added Centrepoint, in the middle of the Central Business
District (CBD) and crowned with the imposing Sydney Tower, and, the Queen
Victoria Building (QVB), the massive and ornate Victorian era building that
was the city's produce markets at the turn of the nineteenth century. In
addition there are a number of complexes centred on the Pitt Street Mall,
such as Glasshouse and the Mid City Centre. Slightly further afield are the
interesting precincts of Darling Harbour
and the large Chinatown area.
Alternatively, browse through the
colourful shops of Paddington or indulge your fantasies in the designer boutiques
of Double Bay.

DARLING
HARBOUR
AT LEISURE WITH SEAFOOD LUNCH AT NICK’S BAR AND GRILL
Suggested Timings: 10.00am –
2.00pm or 12.00pm – 4.00pm
Minimum: 20 Adults
Enjoy a leisurely walk to Circular Quay where you will board
your Rocket Ferry to transfer to King Street Wharf.
Nick's Bar and Grill continues in the tradition of its famous Cockle
Bay counterpart by offering casual al fresco dining
with spectacular waterfront vistas. Located at King Street Wharf,
it is a short stroll from the Rocket Ferry drop off. Apart from fresh seafood
for which Nick's is renowned, the menu offers a selection of Mediterranean
char-grills. Designed around a display kitchen, incorporating an impressive
showcase of fresh produce, diners will delight in the theatre of chefs cooking
over the char-grills. The open plan design gives every diner a view of the
vibrancy of the harbour with its procession of pleasure craft, while charter
boats and cruise liners dock at the front door.
Once you have finished your delicious seafood lunch you have
the option of wandering through to Darling Harbour. Darling Harbour
houses Sydney's convention and exhibition
centre as well as several major tourist attractions, shops, restaurants and
cafes. Built around Cockle Bay
on the western fringe of the city centre, it starts at the lower end of Market Street and stretches to Chinatown,
where it then does a U-turn and continues around to the other side of the
bay.

The Sydney Aquarium is regarded as one of the world's
best. More than 150 metres of clear 'tunnels' pass through the underwater
exhibits so you see fish and sharks swimming around and above you. It has
more than 5000 residents from 350 species, including the uniquely Australian
platypus which lives in river banks and is very difficult to find in the wild.
The exhibit includes saltwater and freshwater crocodiles, seals, fairy penguins
and huge sharks and stingrays.
The Imax Theatre claims to have the world's biggest
movie screen eight storeys high and shows spectacular nature films specially
made for the format, one every hour from 10am to 10pm. There are usually
three movies of approximately 45 minutes, screened in rotation. The Chinese
Garden is a tranquil escape from the bustle of the city at the edge
of Chinatown. It is a large, walled enclave with Chinese
pavilions, large ponds full of ornamental carp, trees and stone statues.
They were a gift from the Chinese province of Guangdong, which is a sister state
to New South Wales.
The Powerhouse Museum, Australia's largest museum,
is devoted to science, aviation and the decorative arts. It is open daily
and has many 'hands on' exhibits, which makes it a favourite with children.
The Australian National Maritime Museum is at the open end of the 'U',
opposite the city. The museum covers Australian maritime history from the
time of sail and includes several floating exhibits moored in the bay, including
the naval frigate Vampire. Pyrmont Bridge, the world's oldest
electrically operated swingspan bridge crosses the mouth of Cockle Bay and provides
alternate access for pedestrians between the city and the museum (instead
of walking around the bay).

views of all that the harbour offers. Continue out of the city in a northerly
direction and pass through some of Sydney’s
most affluent suburbs.
Upon arrival at the Koala Park, you will be warmly welcomed by
a Koala Park
guide who will ensure a memorable visit. At her side will be a Dingo, Australia’s
wild dog. Visitors will have the chance of a lifetime to pat and photograph
this renowned animal.
Once inside the gate, a walk through a beautiful rainforest
setting will lead to a spacious open Koala enclosure. Here, Koalas are free
to roam the entire sanctuary and so often are found in the tree you may be
standing under. The next creature you will meet is the Wombat – a fascinating
marsupial quite similar to the Koala, yet a ground dweller.
Then
head off to the Stockman’s Camp, where you are invited to sit around the campfire
while we have a bit of a yarn about country life and meet true Outback characters.
Enjoy Billy Tea and Damper, part of the staple diet of a drover.
Leave the Stockman’s Camp and your guide will take you down
to the Koala enclosure – here is your chance to cuddle a Koala and have your
photo taken with this most interesting animal. Then it is off to the paddock
where tame kangaroos roam free. Your guide will give you a bag of food for
you to feed the kangaroos.
Finally, it is time on your own to explore the rest of the
park, where you can find Emus, Wallabies, Echidnas, Cockatoos, Galahs, Lorikeets,
plus so much more…

of Sydney’s most beautiful regions
will be a memory of a lifetime.

An explanation of their significance, meaning and how the art was created

and accomplished architect of the day, John Verge, for the Colonial Secretary,
Alexander Macleay and his family, Elizabeth Bay House is a superb example

Vaucluse House
Vaucluse House survives as one of Sydney's
only 19th century harbourside estates with house, kitchen wing, stables and
outbuildings and is still surrounded by 12 hectares of formal gardens and
grounds.
Built
in 1803, Vaucluse House was once owned by William Charles Wentworth, father
of the Australian constitution, his wife, Sarah, and their immediate family
of 10 children who lived in the house from 1827-53 and again in 1861-62.
This gothic style mansion includes both lavish entertaining
rooms and functional 'downstairs' areas. Vaucluse House paints a picture
of the social aspirations and lifestyles of the Wentworths and of the servants,
both convict and free, who lived and worked there. The interiors include
original Wentworth pieces together with furniture, furnishings and collections
of the early to mid 19th century.
Government House
Government House was constructed between 1837-1845.
It is the most sophisticated example of a Gothic Revival building in New South Wales.

and ballroom. These contain an outstanding collection of 19th and 20th century
furnishings and decoration that reflect changing styles and the differing
tastes of the Governors and their wives. The first floor includes State apartments
that were used by the Governor, visiting members of the Royal family and other
Heads of State. The house is sited in an important historic garden overlooking
Sydney harbour. Viewing of the house
